Martin Clarke Returns to Joy's Camp and Elsa's Kopje - June / July 2011

In 1977, as a 23 year old young British man abroad, Martin Clarke arrived at Joy’s tented home in Shaba to assist in rehabilitating a leopard called Penny into the wild. He subsequently spent a year there with Joy and Penny, in what he refers to as an ‘experience of a lifetime.’ An experience described in Joy Adamson’s book ‘The Queen of Shaba.’

After 33 years, Martin has been invited back to Joy’s camp to recall his experiences to interested guests, and show beautiful and intimate slides of his wonderful adventure. Since Joy Adamson’s films were destroyed in an accidental fire, Martin’s acclaimed photos are the only full record of the project.

During his next visit to Joy's Camp, 29th June - 6th July 2011, Martin will be available in camp to answer any questions guests may have about Joy Adamson, and to give a unique insight into the truly complex personality of a true world celebrity, author and naturalist. He will be able to take interested guests on a short walk-through Joy’s original camp - and by holding photos from 1977, with a little imagination, one can stand in the camp gate, kitchen and dining tent, and walk in the footsteps of the legendary Joy Adamson. Later guests have the opportunity to meet Martin for sundowners on 'Penny’s Ridge', and as the dramatic sunset lights up the river plains below, one will sit on the same rocks where Joy and Penny once sat. Finally each evening before dinner, Martin is available to give intimate talks and presentations of his photo collections.

At Elsa's Kopje, where Martin will be from 6th July - 13th July, guests will again be able to witness special presentations about Joy Adamson and her life. In the relaxed atmosphere of the Elsa's Kopje bar, Martin will be able to talk to those faschinated about the history of the Adamsons, giving a unique insight into Joy's complex personality and her relationship with people and animals alike, again illustrated with his own universally acclaimed images.
